Extended Day Coordinator
Kathie Wendt grew up in the very small town of Shiro, Texas, the oldest of four children. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in math from Sam Houston State University in August of 1969, Kathie began her teaching career in the Bryan School District at Sul Ross Elementary and then at Lamar School. During this time, she met and married her husband, Charles Wendt; this December they will have been married for 43 years. They built their home in a rural area outside of Iola in Grimes County and raised their four children. Kathie’s first year of retirement was spent substituting at local schools; the next year Kathie cared for her critically ill mother. Then a tiny granddaughter named Zoe was born two months early to Kathie and Charlie’s daughter and husband. “Gramma” had the privilege of caring for Zoe for the next five years until she started as a PK1 student at Allen Academy. Kathie is now in her fifth year at Allen as the Extended Day Coordinator and states “I love being around and teaching children, When I feel the need for a hug, I just go into my Preschool Extended Day room and get a warm hug from all of the children. When I really miss my teaching days, I go into the Lower School Extended Day room during homework time and I am able to get back into my role of a teacher. I love my job!” Kathie and Charles still live outside of Iola and their family has expanded with the addition of seven grandchildren. Kathie’s best times are spent with her husband, children and grandchildren. She also enjoys reading, cooking and practicing the piano.
