“Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them – a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.”
– Gerald Ford, Former President of the United States
The Band Program
The Band program at Allen Academy is designed as a cohesive musical enrichment program including application of instrumental instruction, music theory and music appreciation from beginner to advanced studies in a respectful, encouraging and engaging environment.
Band at Allen Academy begins in the 5th Grade with a Beginner Band / Instrument Exploration Class. Students in fifth grade attend this class for half of the school year, and explore the instrument families of the symphony orchestra including woodwind, brass, percussion and strings. During this exploration, students have the opportunity to experience holding and making a representative sound on the flute, clarinet, alto-saxophone, violin, cello, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, xylophone, snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion. They learn to play a percussion instrument, which is supplied by the school, and perform as a percussion ensemble for Fine Arts Night in December and April.
Middle School Band students (grades 6-8) and Upper School Band students (grades 9-12) attend separate classes where they continue to expand their knowledge and application of musical terms, musical notation and instrumental performance techniques. During class, rehearsals occur in small groups and through rotation of individual instruction. All Middle School and Upper School Band students prepare music for full ensemble as well as solo literature to perform at Fine Art’s Night in the winter and spring at Allen Academy. Students also share their talents and enthusiasm for music by presenting a Recital Performance of Solos for a local retirement community during the school year.
Band students in grades 7-12, in addition to Fine Arts Night performances, audition in December for Region Band as part of the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) of Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA). In the spring, select students are asked to prepare a solo to be performed by memory and with piano accompaniment to audition for the Composer’s Festival with the Brazos Valley Music Teachers Association (BVMTA).
The Allen Band – “Rockin’ Rams!”
The “Rockin’ Rams!”, which includes all band students in grades 6 -12, adds spirit to the home varsity football games by playing “pep”music in the stands and performing on the field at half-time.
Throughout the school year, all Band students are encouraged to expand their musical interests outside of the classroom by participating in class field trips, attending a concert of their choice in the community and participating in summer band camps. Through active participation and active listening in the classroom, on the performance stage and in the community, Band students at Allen Academy progressively advance in their musical studies to discover a long, lasting appreciation for music.
