Athletics – Year in Review

It was a splendid year for Allen Academy athletics – arguably the greatest in school history! Our teams won six State Championships, several players and coaches were named Player/Coach of the Year, and our student-athletes totaled 82 All-State Honors across nine sports.

Football won the Division I State Championship with a 13-0 record. The last team to achieve such a feat was the 1969 team that allowed only 38 points during a 10-0 season. Nine Rams were named to the Division I All-State team and Jason Jolly was named Coach of the Year. The following are the All-State players and additional honors: Carter Kacal – 1st Team Offense (Kicker & Back), Honorable Mention Defense; Chris Hassell – 1st Team Offense; Clay de Jong – 1st Team Defense, 2nd Team Offense; Cody Vega – 1st Team Offense, Honorable Mention Defense; Caleb Phillips – 2nd Team Offense; Tyler Scott – 2nd Team Defense; Grant Rhoads – 2nd Team Defense; Gareth Prescott – 2nd team Utility, Honorable Mention Offense; Eric Vega – Honorable Mention Offense; Cody Vega named TCAL Football Player of the Year, MVP at TCAL All-Star Game; Cody Vega, Clay de Jong, Carter Kacal named All-Brazos Valley 6-Man Team.

Cross Country finished 4th at the State Meet, while the girls raced with two competitors. Sarah Clanton finished in 9th place to earn her third All-State finish; Christopher Benner (7th) and Brent Westbrook (10th) also finished in the top 10 to earn All-State honors. This was Christopher’s second and Brent’s third consecutive top-10 finish at the State Meet.

Volleyball made it to the State Semi-Finals, where they fell 3-1 to the eventual State Champions El Paso Homeschool. They finished with a 12-9 record, an 8-win improvement over the previous season. Four girls were named All-State: Ally Friedman – 1st Team All-State; Claire Shenkir – 2nd Team All-State; A’Lyssa Cunningham – 2nd Team All-State; Sabha Dosani – Honorable Mention All-State

The Cheer team finished 3rd in the Large School division at the State Championships held in late February, and 4th overall. The team had a total of 17 members, three of which earned All-State Honors: Alex Tan – 1st Team All-State; Chloe Scott – 2nd Team All-State; Riley Lasell – Honorable Mention All-State

Both Basketball teams won the 2A Championships for the second consecutive year! The Girls team became the first in any female sport to win back-to-back Championships in school history. They return every player for next year’s run at a three-peat. Our boys team finished off their ‘drive for five’ with a 57-50 victory over El Paso Homeschool. Eight athletes were honored with All-State accolades – two with Player of the Year awards. Coach Dave Bliss was named the Brazos Valley Coach of the Year. The Following Boys were honored: Gabriel Blume – 1st Team All-State; Steven Henderson – 1st Team All-State; Cody Vega – 2nd Team All-State; Robin Li – Honorable Mention All-State; TCAL All-Tournament Team – Gabriel Blume (MVP), Steven Henderson, Cody Vega, Robin Li; Gabriel Blume – TCAL 2A Basketball Player of the Year; Gabriel Blume – 3rd Team All-Brazos Valley; Steven Henderson, Robin Li – Academic All-Brazos Valley. The following Girls were honored: Ally Friedman – 1st Team All-State; Sophie Fojt – 1st Team All-State; Sabha Dosani – 1st Team All-State; A’Lyssa Cunningham – 2nd Team All-State; TCAL All-Tournament Team – Ally Friedman (MVP), Sabha Dosani, Sophie Fojt; Ally Friedman – TCAL 2A Basketball Player of the Year; Ally Friedman – 3rd Team All-Brazos Valley; Sabha Dosani – Academic All-Brazos Valley

Soccer did a tremendous job in their first season in three years! They finished the season with a 5-5 record, with the most memorable experience being a shootout victory over San Marcos Academy in the Consolation Semi-Finals.

Tennis traveled to the State Tournament with eight players. A’Lyssa Cuningham and Ellie Schwab paired to make it to the Girl’s Doubles Semi-Finals, while A’Lyssa also made it the Semi-Finals in Girl’s Singles. Chance Donaho made it to the Boy’s Singles Semi-Finals. All three earned All-State honors for their advancement to the final four.

Our Boys Golf team made it over the hump to win a State Championship after three consecutive years as Runner-Up. Senior, Carter Kacal led the charge, finishing in second place, while Anton Soriano (3rd) and Gareth Prescott (8th) rounded out the trio of Top-10 finishers for the Rams.

Track and Field had a total of 34 athletes compete at the State Meet. Those numbers helped the Boys win the State Championship in Division II, while the Girls finished as Runner-Up. In total, the boys earned 16 medals and the girls 18. Every athlete that finished in the top three as an individual or member of a relay is considered All-State. The results from the meet were as follows: Boys – Cody Vega – 1st 100m; Brent Westbrook – 1st 400m; Gareth Prescott – 1st 300H; Brent Westbrook – 1st Discus; Boys 400 Relay (State Record) – 1st (Gareth Prescott, Cody Vega, Eric Vega, Brent Westbrook); Boys 800 Relay – 2nd (Jooho Lee, Caleb Phillips, Eric Vega, Gareth Prescott); Stephen Prescott – 2nd Discus; Jooho Lee – 2nd Pole Vault; Brent Westbrook – 3rd High Jump; Brent Westbrook – Co-High Point Scorer Division II Men’s – 35 points; Girls – Claire Shenkir – 1st Discus; Ally Friedman – 2nd Shot Put; Ress Newman – 2nd High Jump; Ally Friedman – 2nd Pole Vault; Girls 400 Relay – 2nd (Claire Donaho, Ally Friedman, Sabha Dosani, Rees Newman); Kylee Gilstrap – 3rd Discus; Madison Westbrook – 3rd Pole Vault; Girls 800 Relay – 3rd (Ally Friedman, Claire Donaho, Sabha Dosani, Rees Newman); Girls 1600 Relay – 3rd (Rani Schwartz, Madison Westbrook, Sara Zoghi, Kendall Kacal)

Baseball capped of a rainy season, as well as the year in athletics for the Rams, with a 12-0 shutout of San Antonio Atonement in the 2A Final. That victory capped their second consecutive undefeated season and their third consecutive TCAL State Championship. Cody Vega pitched two No-Hitters for the Rams in their 7-0 season. They had nine players named to All-State Teams: Cody Vega – 1st Team All-State; Grant Rhoads – 1st Team All-State; Tyler Scott – 1st Team All-State; Eric Vega – 2nd Team All-State; Kolby Dupont – 2nd Team All-State; Caleb Phillips – 2nd Team All-State; Anil Schwartz – Honorable Mention All-State; Brent Westbrook – Honorable Mention All-State; Chris Hassell – Honorable Mention All-State

This year of athletics will be remembered for many years to come, not only for the victories, but because of the memories made along the way. Thank you to all players, coaches, parents and friends of Allen Academy who made this year successful in all aspects!
