Cody Vega ran for three touchdowns and threw for another, sparking the Allen Academy Rams to a 62-8 mercy-rule victory over Greenville Phoenix Charter in the TCAL Division I state championship game Saturday.

Vega’s dodging 33-yard run in the second quarter gave Allen Academy a 56-6 lead, and the Rams maintained their big lead to clinch the win at halftime via the 45-point rule at Incarnate Word University’s Benson Field.

The victory completed a 13-0 season for the Rams, who captured their first TCAL state football title. The Phoenix Firebirds finished at 8-5.

Vega’s first touchdown came on a sweep 40 seconds after the opening kickoff. Allen Academy’s Tyler Scott sacked Firebirds quarterback Tyler Killian for a safety to push the lead to 18-0. Fellow senior Grant Rhoads added another safety sack later in the first quarter.

Carter Kacal’s second scoring run, from 4 yards, lifted the Rams to a 34-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Sophomore Cedric Stanton picked off a pass to set up the Firebirds’ first touchdown. Stanton caught the TD pass with 1:32 left in the opening quarter to cut Allen Academy’s lead to 34-6.

But Caleb Phillips rolled left into the end zone with 0:05 left in the opening quarter for a 40-6 lead, then Vega threw a touchdown pass to Clay DeJong for a 48-6 edge 8 minutes before halftime.

Gareth Prescott and Eric Vega each had interceptions for the Rams. It was Prescott’s seventh interception of the season.
