Allen Academy Announces New Athletic Director
Dear Allen Academy community,
Beginning in late November, a ten-member search committee facilitated an exhaustive search for an Athletic Director that drew more than 70 candidates from around the world. After reading resumes, making phone calls, conducting Skype interviews, and eventually bringing four finalists to campus, the committee incorporated input from all constituent groups (faculty, staff, administration, students, parents, and trustees) and ultimately came to a unanimous decision.
I am excited to announce that on February 27, 2017, Mr. Sam McCrary enthusiastically accepted the offer to be our school’s Athletic Director, effective June 1, 2017. Sam’s performance and experience in independent schools, his energy and passion for students and athletics, and his vision are a seamless match for our school.
Sam comes to us from Saint Mary’s Hall in San Antonio, TX where he has been for the past 14 years, serving as the Athletic Director for the past four. Sam has spent his entire career in schools, serving in various roles over that time: physical science teacher, licensed athletic trainer, Dean of Students, and Assistant Head of Lower School, in addition to Athletic Director. Earning his B.A. in Kinesiology from the University of Texas-San Antonio, Sam also earned a Masters in Education degree from Trinity University.
Sam and his wife Leslie, who is also an educator, are both natives of Texas. Together, the McCrarys have three children (son Cale – 18 and daughters Madelyn – 14 and Meredith – 11). The McCrary girls will attend Allen in the fall.
In accepting his appointment, Sam said, “When my wife and I first saw the position post on NAIS and began looking into Allen Academy, I clearly remembered a great interaction with the girls basketball team the previous year during a basketball shoot around on my current campus. I saw in the team and coaches a great heart and drive – two qualities I feel essential for success. I was sold and knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. What’s more, heart and drive were distinct qualities everyone I met embodied throughout the interview process. I look forward to unifying the athletic department and creating a more seamless association throughout the school. Working in tandem, athletics and academics work to create members of society that can adapt and thrive in any situation. I’m ready. I’m excited. Let’s do this!”
I hope you will join me in welcoming Sam and his family to Allen. We are certainly poised for great things under his leadership
P.S. I want to give my sincere thanks to the members of the search committee who gave countless hours and excellent energy throughout this process: Rusty Baker ’98 (alum), Stephanie Cumpton (parent), Dan Dawson (parent and Board member), Tracey Deupree (parent), Lisa Ellis (parent), Mark Engstrom (Head of MS/US, parent), Monique Glover (parent and Rambackers Chair), Jason Jolly (Interim AD), and Paula McMillan (PE Dept.
