Rams win the State Championship!
Defeat Greenville Phoenix Charter 62-8 and finish the season at 13-0. The 2014 Rams become the first team in 45 years to finish the season as State Champions and be undefeated. Awesome season! Congratulations players and coaches!
Cody Vega ran for three touchdowns and threw for another, sparking the Allen Academy Rams to a 62-8 mercy-rule victory over Greenville Phoenix Charter in the TCAL Division I state championship game Saturday.
Vega’s dodging 33-yard run in the second quarter gave Allen Academy a 56-6 lead, and the Rams maintained their big lead to clinch the win at halftime via the 45-point rule at Incarnate Word University’s Benson Field.
The victory completed a 13-0 season for the Rams, who captured their first TCAL state football title. The Phoenix Firebirds finished at 8-5.
Vega’s first touchdown came on a sweep 40 seconds after the opening kickoff. Allen Academy’s Tyler Scott sacked Firebirds quarterback Tyler Killian for a safety to push the lead to 18-0. Fellow senior Grant Rhoads added another safety sack later in the first quarter.
Carter Kacal’s second scoring run, from 4 yards, lifted the Rams to a 34-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Sophomore Cedric Stanton picked off a pass to set up the Firebirds’ first touchdown. Stanton caught the TD pass with 1:32 left in the opening quarter to cut Allen Academy’s lead to 34-6.
But Caleb Phillips rolled left into the end zone with 0:05 left in the opening quarter for a 40-6 lead, then Vega threw a touchdown pass to Clay DeJong for a 48-6 edge 8 minutes before halftime.
Gareth Prescott and Eric Vega each had interceptions for the Rams. It was Prescott’s seventh interception of the season.
